An indoor dog potty shorter or taller than 3.5" (which means all) is not very effective. For those who bought a super inexpensive or flat potty, you already have found this out.
So really, what is the real issue here. Well, it is actually so-simple that all of you have seen the answer at least 100 times before. Really! If you have been to the dog park, walked your dog, seen other dogs go potty, then you have witnessed the keen power of observation. I did the same thing and finally got it.
Your dog does not look or source out an exact spot; it looks for a proximate spot where it's own pheromone, or another dog has gone before. So proximity, pheromone, and repetition plays a role.
So how do you get a dog to drill down on a unique spot? It is not that big of a secret anymore. Here it is...your dog wants a familiar, safe instinctual and behavioral friendly spot to go. So where the heck is that? It is anywhere you want them to go, but it has to fit this criteria. Okay, I am getting there. You need to get all of their plans to the designated spot. The only way to do this is to get them to go up, yes, up. Then, and only then, will the consistency so remarkable, that you will be thanking my French Bulldog. Oh, you though I would say me.
Dogs need a level and secure area long enough, wide enough, and tall enough to actually make them go completely on it. Through my Frenchie, I found this answer. It needs to be 3.5" tall because it is a natural and easy step-up for ALL dogs, young and old.
Next, placement is not really optional as you think, without allot of extra training. Again, it is a dogs natural movement and finding the spot that is important. So, take two single angles out of play. one width and one length to assist you dog in getting a good starting position. You want it to have one long-side and one width-side accessible only. Look at my dog go potty on the Go-Doogy-Go Indoor Dog Potty. All of these factors makes it a 100% hit-potty.
When is the last time ANY indoor potty company told you anything about this - probably never. If they did, you wouldn't buy their product because now you know the success rate is minimal. Okay, there you have it. Why on earth would you buy any other product?
